Radio instruments, past results and future prospects

Radio waves provide unique or complementary diagnostics of the solar atmosphere, comprising parameters of the plasma and of energetic particle populations. We'll illustrate this with a few examples of recent research and then address topics where future radio instrumentation can provide significant new insight : the measurement of coronal magnetic fields especially in active regions through spectral imaging at cm-waves, the localisation of sites of particle acceleration in flares through spectral imaging at decimetre-metre waves, and the investigation of relativistic particles and thermal plasma from the chromosphere, through novel measurements at sub-millimetre and far infra red wavelengths.
