Eruption precursors

Accurate forecasting of solar eruptions is one of the primary goals of solar and space weather forecasters. Although it is now known that solar eruptions occur due to the destabilisation of magnetic fields in the complex topologies ofactive regions and filaments, it is still unclear how energy is stored andreleased in these features. In this talk, I will review the observationalinsights we have gained from instruments such as EIT and MDI onboard SOHO, and how advances in data-analysis and modelling have enhanced our understanding of the fundamental physics involved in triggering solar eruptions. |
