Pure impulsive solar energetic particle events are characterized by dramatic enhancements in the abundance of 3He and heavy elements which are believed to arise from preferential acceleration due to resonant wave-particle interactions. These events have long been associated with solar flares and type III radio-bursts (Reames, von Rosenvinge, & Lin 1985). However, some 3He-rich events can be found which are accompanied also by coronal mass ejections and type II radio bursts, signature of a shock propagating in the corona or the interplanetary medium. A survey of 3He-rich events associated with type II radio-bursts observed between 1996 and 2006 by the Electron Proton and Helium Instrument (EPHIN) onboard SOHO is presented. The distribution of source heliolongitudes, energy spectra and electron and ion onset delays relative to the flare and type II/III radio emission are examined in order to clarify the relative importance of the flare and the shock for particle acceleration and injection during this kind of events. |
